This commission was established during the 1995 OPTIMA meeting in Sevilla. As a first step towards integrating available information resources, the OPTIMA WWW site was created by the Secretariate, the BGBM in Berlin has offered to initially house and administer the site. In collaboration with other organizations and projects, it is planned to promote access to:
-
Established phytotaxonomy-related databases relevant to the Mediterranean area. This can include all publicly available data sources - from structured word processor files held by individual researchers, to institutional database, to databases accessible via Internet.
-
Taxonomic computing expert resources. This is to identify companies and individuals who have experience in the design and implementation of botanical databases.
-
Botanical Database projects for the Mediterranean area. This directory is to list projects which are in the planning stage, or which have not yet produced publicly available data.
2008. The commission continue to maintain and update the OPTIMA Web pages. These include a News column where relevant information can be added if and when available, to be consolidated annually into a formal OPTIMA Newsletter. Recent Newsletter issues have been placed on the OPTIMA Website page as a .pdf files, available for free download.
2007. The Commission met in Pisa. It was decided to transfer the Web pages of OPTIMA to Palermo so as to keep it up-to-date, which has indeed occurred. The contents were transferred from the server in Berlin-Dahlem to a commercial server in Italy.
The pages concerning Commission activities, whether physically based at Palermo or held on Web servers at the Commission Secretaries’ home base, are to be maintained and kept up to date by the respective Commission Secretary.
